Veterinary Hospital Set For Birmingham Site

A new veterinary hospital is set to be the first major development at the site for a former car factory in Birmingham.

Developer St Modwen is seeking planning permission for the construction of the facility after £20 million of infrastructure investment from the West Midlands Combined Authority at the West Longbridge Business Park site, formerly occupied by the Rover Car Plant.

If planning permission is granted, construction work will commence next year, with the first scheduled treatments taking place in 2023. Using the latest medical equipment, it will provide diagnostic, laboratory, operations and administrative space on the three acre site, with veterinary specialists IVC Evidensia using it as a major centre of excellence.

Discussing the new hospital scheme, development director for Strategic Land & Regeneration at St Modwen Elliot Sellars said: “This is a key first element of West Longbridge and will become a real centrepiece for that part of the town.”

He added: “It also has the potential to be a real beacon of veterinary excellence in medicine and treatment.”

Ultimately, the site is planned to help provide 5,000 new jobs, reviving the area on the south-western edge of the city and giving it a new purpose now its car-making days are behind it.

However, the development of the West Longbridge Business Park will not just involve commercial scaffolding, with 350 new homes also being built on the site.

The use of part of the site for housing will help the city meet its ever-growing need for housing, with the current estimated population estimated to be 1.14 million and growing, close to Birmingham’s historic peak.

Birmingham’s current ten-year housing plan covers the period 2019-2029 and envisages the construction of 2,708 homes. Many of these will be constructed on brownfield sites, with other major projects in south Birmingham including a regeneration scheme in King’s Norton.  However, some homes are also marked for more contentious locations like greenbelt in Sutton Coldfield.
