What is The National Retrofit Strategy?

The National Retrofit Strategy is a plan for upgrading British homes which has now been issued for consultation, according to probuildermag.co.uk. The plan is considered vital to achieving the changes necessary to meet the carbon net zero targets set by the government.

The plan is part of wider moves by the Construction Leadership Council (CLC), which is acting on concerns that the UK will fail to meet the net zero targets by 2050 without more strategic long-term planning. In order to make homes more energy and water-efficient, the CLC is collaborating with industry, finance, and other community bodies.

A result of this partnership is the Roadmap to Recovery Plan, which aims to reduce the carbon dioxide production of UK homes, which are currently responsible for 20% of all emissions, and 35% of energy consumption in the country. This will not only put the UK on course to meet the 2050 target, but also make its homes warmer and cheaper to run.

The National Retrofit Strategy will also help towards the government target to upgrade as many homes as possible to Energy Performance Certificate status by 2035. The plan will also help the construction industry bounce back from the current economic crisis, as it will provide long-term work for the repair, maintenance and improvement sector.

Mark Reynolds, CLC Steering Coordination Group member, commented: “This strategy puts forward an ambitious plan for tackling climate change and creating jobs.”

“It is fantastic to see the high level of support for the strategy from our industry. The CLC looks forward to working with BEIS and the Treasury to determine how the Government can adopt the strategy’s recommendations.”

The scheme aims to create a ‘building passport’ for every home, with grants, funding and training modules available to carry out improvements such as cavity wall insulation, double glazing, roof repairs and draughtproofing.
