11 Feb Government Announces New Green Building Targets
The government has announced plans to make all new-build homes in the UK highly energy efficient, with low-carbon heating and to be zero-carbon ready by 2025.
According to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, this will result in new-build properties producing 75 to 80 per cent lower carbon emissions than current levels. From this year, new homes will be expected to produce 31 per cent lower carbon emissions than existing properties.
In addition, the government plans to introduce new rules relating to the standards for the likes of extensions, as well as replacing and repairing the likes of windows, fixed lighting, heat pumps and cooling systems in current homes.
Housing minister Christopher Pincher MP commented: “The radical new standards announced today will not only improve energy efficiency of existing homes and other buildings, but will also ensure our new homes are fit for the future.”
An article for Green Tech Media suggested that the new standards could boost the takeup of solar panels in England.
It cited Scotland as an example, where tighter rules on new-build homes were adopted and now 80 per cent of new homes in the country feature solar panels. New residential properties in Scotland also produce 22 per cent less carbon than their equivalents in England.
The news provider noted that, if the same rate of adoption were recorded in England, more than 200,000 new solar powered homes could be incorporated into the country’s grid every year.
